Mount Mitake

Posted on 14 May 2009 by supergaijin

Mount Mitake is a beautiful wooded mountain with a shrine at the top. The area has an abundance of nature walks of varying lengths and difficulties so that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery. Mitake is part of the much larger Chichibu Tama Kai National Park which covers some 1250 square meters.

You can opt to catch a cable car half way up the mountain and then hike the remaining 20-30 minutes. There is a little village along the way and the station itself is rather quaint. A hiking guide of the area is available at the Mitake Visitor Center. This area is popular with hikers and day trippers because of its proximity to Tokyo and the vast amount of options for getting lost in the beautiful wooded countryside.

How to get there: Chuo Line to Ome Station and then take the Ome Line to Mitake Station. Then catch a 10 minute bus to the base of the cable car.

Admission Fee: Free (1090 yen if you take the cable car)
Opening Hours: Need to check with Mitake Station for cable car and bus hours
