Another great way to occupy the kids on a rainy day is to take them to one of Tokyo’s aquariums. There are several that are quite big and a lot of fun to look around.
This aquarium is in the relatively new Kasai Rinkai Koen. There is a huge park next to the aquarium and you are right by the sea. The bulk of the aquarium is underground and it is fairly large. There are all manner of fish, even some sharks. There is also a penguin enclosure which is entertaining for adults and kids alike.
Yokohama Hakejima Sea Paradise
This is a really good aquarium and one of the larger ones in Japan. There have dolphin shows and several fun park amusement rides which make for a great day with the kids. It is right next to the sea so you get the added advantage of fresh sea air (well, as fresh as it gets in the Tokyo Bay). The whole Hakejima area is 24 hectares so you can spend the whole day and still not see everything.
Sunshine City Aquarium, Planetarium, and Observatory
This is located in the Nakano area and is a little older than the previous two aquariums. It is slightly different than the other two. There is a seal show and their are some massive crabs in one of the tanks. This aquarium is a little bit more of a learning/ science type environment and you also have the planetarium and observatory to check out.
Shinagawa Aquarium
This is another large new aquarium. There are dolphin and seal shows as well as a spectacular array of aquatic life in this multi level aquarium.
