This little brew was concocted by Abashiri Breweries in Hokkaido. Just like its name the beverage consists of 30% milk and 70% beer. Supposedly it is a smoother, silkier version of beer and was meant to appeal to the female beer market. Apparently the product flopped but we have talked to one friend who said it tasted pretty good…but then again…the Japanese like that shiokara stuff with raw squid guts and some salty stuff that we dare not guess the origin of.

Hawaiian Deep Sea Water is deep sea water that has been desalinated. The product was a fairly big hit and the Japanese owned bottling factory in Hawaii has trouble keeping up with demand. The main attraction of the drink is the large amount of minerals in the water which supposedly have major health benefits. We think it tastes like someone has relieved themselves in a chlorinated pool (well, we never actually tried the pool water but we imagine it would taste like Hawaiian Deep Sea Water).

Not only does the English on this can claim that it is bottled water but the main name for the product states “ Water for use in the case of emergencies and disaster”. So if you have drums of water stored in your bomb cellar for earthquakes and nuclear war we recommend that you replace them as soon as possible with this special canned bottle water designed expressly for this purpose.

This blue beer apparently gets its color from spirulina. The beer is marketed by a Hokkaido brewery as a winter beer with the cool blue color supposedly emoting the clear icy blues of the winter Hokkaido seas and snow. It still remains to be seen whether anyone would want to drink a blue beer. No takers here.

Just looking at the name makes you laugh. This is truly bizarre. Imagine the backlash in our nanny state western society over labeling a product “Kids Beer”. I can just hear the conservatives raving about bringing up a nation of young alcoholics. Generally these would be the same parents who set the example for their kids by consuming copious amounts of beer at home. Originally this beverage was called Guarana but sales went through the roof when it was renamed “kidsbeer”. Read the rest of this entry »

Deeppresso Coffee really takes the cake. There are all sorts of crazy names for Coffee in Japan including BJ Coffee but this one is the best. A coffee where the caffeine actually fails to pick you up. Rather, you go into a deep depression and spend the day in bed? The secret crazy beverage naming guild has really gone to town on this one. Well done!

The name here which has us in stitches. Calling something Diet Water is a little like calling a product Empty Vacuum. We are assuming that this product has minerals added which may help you consume calories faster when you are dieting, or some such marketing madness. However, the name is still amusing.

We had to add this one in, even though it is not actually a Japanese drink. This is the Koreans imitating the Calpis label and calling it Coolpis. Not only is the name a crack up, but the flavors are peach and kim chee. Anyone who knows what Kim Chee is will realize what a bizarre drink flavor this is. Kim Chee is just about the national food of Korea and is made from cabbage pickled and fermented in a potent garlic and chilli sauce. How this works as a drink is not clear as we have not tried this one. We won’t be rushing to order a box of them though.

Pepsi Ice Cucumber sounds like a weird combination, even though both on their own don’t taste too bad. Actually the cucumber is kinda refreshing and the drink works pretty well. Crazy combination though.

Calpis

Would you believe Calpis (pronounced ‘Cow Piss’) is a milk flavored drink? Actually its closer to a watery yogurt flavored drink and tastes really good. How Calpis got through as a name for a milky drink is beyond us though. There are other varieties of this such as Calpis Water, Calpis Soda and Hot Calpis.
