Reportedly one of the more popular maid cafes in Tokyo, Cos-cha maid cafe has waitresses who are all in their early 20s. They try to keep their finger on the pulse in terms of trends and change the constumes of the ‘Angels’ depending on which anime or video game is in vogue at the time.

The food is slightly expensive as the ‘Angels’ provide additional service when tending to you.

Translated as ‘Chicks Bar’, Hiyoko refers to a baby chicken and not as you may expect a ‘Hip chick’. Hiyokoya is full of cute girls in maid uniforms welcoming you home with a “Okaeri Nasai”!

Hiyokoya is a little bit out of the way though and not located near the cluster of other maid cafes. To get there you have to cross Showa Dori, head north up the highway towards Saitama and Ueno and turn left after you pass the Daily Yamazaki supermarket.

Cutierelax maid cafe is similar to Cure Maid Cafe in that it is a massage parlor, with the novelty being that the girls are dressed up as maids. Relaxing music mixed with an aroma creates a relaxing mood. The massages cost around 2500 yen for about 20 minutes – you can choose the part of the body – foot/hand etc.

Cafe@Home is a good place for beginner maid cafe goers to visit. Most of the food is reasonably priced and they have regular contests such as stone, scissors, paper (Jun-ken-poi) where you can win prizes. You can also have your photo take with a maid (for a price!).

The maids at Cafe@home don’t all necessarily wear traditional maid uniforms; there are a variety of cosplay costumes on show!

Little PSX Maid Cafe is a maid cafe with dart boards and 150 different types of cocktails. Part of the attraction is that the maids teach you in a very friendly way how to play darts, so pretending that you can’t play could be an advantage.

The Royal Milk Aromacare and Maid Cafe was opened in June 2005. This cafe is distinctly pink with a relaxation area where you can get aroma therapy. You can also play card games with maids. To use this space you have to make a reservation in advance.

For the aroma care you have to become a member (1,000 yen) and you can choose the maid of your choice for another 1,000 yen

Cure maid cafe was the first maid cafe opened in Akihabara, in 2001. Cure [More...] maid cafe has a relaxing atmosphere with a garden on the terrace.  The cafe is pretty mild by maid cafe standards and the staff are chilled.

Tokyo Game Show is the biggest computer entertainment show in the world, held at Makuhari Messe (Nippon Convention Center) every year in late September.

Comiket (Comic Market, ???), is held twice a year in Tokyo and boasts 35,000 Dojinshi (coterie comics) publishing circles and many atenders. The expo is broken into separate groups such as Doujinshi Circles (publishing groups), Cosplay and Corporate booths.  For those dressing up in their cosplay gear (i.e. those dressing up as their favourite anime, manga and/or characters), they have a dedicated dressing room. It costs about 800 yen per person to register. There are about 4 to 5 girls for every 1 guy who dresses up in Cosplay (thank god!).

The ‘Circle’ genres are broken down into Manga (comic books), Anime, Games and other. Other includes things like live action monsters, science fiction, mechanics related, military related, trains, travel, music, celebrity related and sports.

Comic Market participants are suprisingly mostly women (71%) to men (29%) – these are the ‘Circle’ organizers. Average age of the organizers is about 28. The gener breakdown of general attendees also favors women – 57% women and 43% men.

Comiket Inc. incorporated in 1985 and changed to its present form in 1996, was formed in order to facilitate activities that require the presence of a legal entity, such as negotiating with public agencies, signing contracts etc. The main role of Comiket is to support the Comic Market Preparations Committee for activities it can’t do on its own.
